اكد السفير الاميركي في العراق كريستوفر هيل ان العراق سيمر بعام سياسي حرج، كما اعرب عن قلقه من الجو العام في البلاد عقب انسحاب القوات الاميركية من المدن. The U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Christopher Hill, said Iraq will pass to a political embarrassment, also expressed concern about the general atmosphere in the country following the withdrawal of U.S. troops from cities. وقال هيل في اجابة عن تساؤل لـ(المدى) خلال الطاولة المستديرة التي جمعته امس الاحد مع عدد من الاعلاميين العراقيين، قال ان «العراق سيمر خلال الـ(12) شهرا القادمة بظروف سياسية حرجة». Hill said in answer to the question of (term) during the round table gathered Sunday with a number of media in Iraq, he said, «Iraq will pass over the (12) months, the next critical political conditions». واضاف ان «هذه التوقعات تم استقاؤها من تصريحات الرئيس الاميركي باراك اوباما»، داعيا القوى السياسية العراقية الى التحرك بسرعة لخلق توافقات سياسية تدعم مسيرة البلد نحو الاستقرار على الصعيدين الامني والسياسي. He added that «these expectations have been drawn from statements made by U.S. President Barack Obama», calling on the Iraqi political forces to move quickly to create a political consensus to support the country’s march towards the stabilization of the security and the political.

واشار السفير الاميركي الى ان جهود الساسة العراقيين في انضاج المصالحة الوطنية من شأنها دفع عجلة الاستقرار الوطني وتفتح الطريق لحل القضايا العالقة داخليا بين الكتل المشاركة في العملية السياسية، مبينا ان جهود المصالحة ستصب جميعها في بوتقة العملية السياسية وتؤسس لعمل حكومي تشترك فيه جميع القوى الوطنية. The U.S. ambassador to the efforts of Iraqi politicians in the mature national reconciliation would advance the national stability and open the way to resolve the issues outstanding between the masses persons participating in the political process, indicating that the reconciliation efforts will feed all in the crucible of the political process and establish the work of a government involving all the national forces.
من جانب اخر، افاد هيل ان الاتفاقية الامنية بين بغداد وواشنطن دخلت مرحلة التنفيذ الفعلي مع الخطوة الاولى من انسحاب القوات الاميركية التي ستنهي تسليم كافة معسكراتها الى القوات العراقية التي اثبتت جاهزيتها لان تحل محل القوات المتعددة في الامساك بالارض، واستدرك « ان القوات الاميركية المتبقية في العراق ستنسحب من جميع المناطق حتى تلك المتنازع عليها كالموصل وكركوك، وليس من مصلحتنا عدم الالتزام بالاتفاقية وتنفيذ بنودها المقرة بين بغداد وواشنطن». وفي مجال تنفيذ انسحاب القوات الاميركية من المدن ميدانياً، اكد السفير الاميركي انه اوضح خلال زيارته الاخيرة في اليومين الماضيين لاعضاء الكونغرس الاميركي الية الانسحاب التدريجي انتهاء بتسليم اخر المعسكرات للجانب العراقي في الموعد المتفق عليه بين الطرفين، مؤكدا ان المرحلة القادمة ستكون فيها للقوات الاميركية مهام مدنية تكرس للعمل التنموي في العراق بعيدا عن الجهد العسكري، واستدرك بالقول «سنتدخل عسكريا ولوجستيا في حال استدعت الضرورة للدعم بطلب من قبل الجانب العراقي»، مضيفا ان القوات الامريكية ستعيد انتشارها اعتبارا من يوم غد الثلاثاء، لكننا لن نخفض من عددها حتى شهر اب من عام 2010 وسيتم تقليص عديدها من 130 الف جندي الى 50 الف فقط. As the United States gears up for a complete pullout of its troops from Iraq Tuesday, Iraqis seem all the more worried about the future of security in their country.

Sitting in his small room in northern Baghdad, a pistol nearby and assault rifles stacked under the bed, Khalil Ibrahim is worried over Iraq’s future.
Six years after the U.S. invasion, Iraqis are contemplating the reality of life after a major milestone — Tuesday’s withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from
urban centres.

Glancing at his seven-year-old son playing a war game on a computer in the corner, Ibrahim, a chain-smoking former military intelligence officer, said he has two main worries.

” If the Americans pull out, al Qaeda will return ”
Khalil Ibrahim, Iraqi intelligence officer”Iran has good relations with our political parties. They run militias. If the U.S. troops complete their withdrawal, Iran will do whatever it wants in Iraq,” he said, scowling.

Shiite-ruled Iran is often accused of arming and funding Shiite militias who have killed Sunnis, a charge Tehran denies.

“Also, if the Americans pull out, al-Qaeda will return,” Ibrahim, who said he knows the Islamists better than most, feared.

As leader of a U.S.-backed Sunni Arab guard unit made up of many former
insurgents, some of his men fought with the rebels against the U.S. military, before switching sides and helping drive al-Qaeda fighters out of much of Iraq.

Only a small number of U.S. troops will be left in Iraqi cities after the June 30 deadline
But as U.S. forces increasingly hand control to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s Shiite Muslim-led government under a security pact that requires them to withdraw completely by 2012, tensions are rising.

Earlier this month Admiral Mike Mullen, United States chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the pan-Arab station Al Arabiya TVthat al-Qaeda’s activities in Iraq have declined and warned that the organization’s leadership may shift from Iraq to Somalia.

Violence has dropped sharply across Iraq, but fighters still launch devastating bombings. They are usually blamed on Sunni Arab insurgents like al Qaeda, and seem aimed at undermining Maliki’s administration and tipping the nation back into the sectarian slaughter of 2006.

The last few days have seen two of the worst attacks in more than a year. A suicide truck bomb killed at least 73 worshippers leaving a Shiite mosque near northern Kirkuk city on June 20. Four days later another blast tore through a market in Baghdad’s Sadr City, a Shiite slum, killing 72 people.

The government has warned that bloodshed is likely to intensify ahead of an even more important milestone for Iraq than this week’s — a parliamentary election due in January.

With the U.S. withdrawal from cities, many Iraqis from Shiite and Sunni sects say they feel exposed to what they say is corruption and incompetence afflicting Iraqi security forces.

Marwa, a Shiite Iraqi”We’re afraid of what will happen in the next few days,” 40-year-old Shiite civil servant Salah Abd told Reuters by the wreckage of the Sadr City blast. “We could lose a lot of lives.”

Others are more optimistic about the U.S. withdrawal, which will see almost all U.S. troops pull back to rural bases.

“The Iraqi forces will improve, and then they will be better than Americans because they have our best interests at heart,” said a 44-year-old Shiite woman called Marwa. She was taking advantage of the quiet weekend streets to shop for a digital camera in the upmarket Karrada district.

U.S. military officials say they have plans in place that will let them redeploy if Iraq asks for their help. And their main bases in violent Northern provinces have all been defined as “rural” to allow them to retain a presence.

Ibrahim, IraqiAt his apartment in northern Baghdad’s run-down Adhamiya neighborhood, Ibrahim, who also goes by the name of Abu Omar, remained sceptical.

Al-Qaeda frequently targets the Sunni guard units, known as Awakening Councils, or Majalis al-Sahwa in Arabic, since they switched sides. His brother was killed on duty last July, then one son was killed by a Yemeni suicide bomber in August.

A second son was slain by a Shiite militia in 2005.

Lighting another cigarette, he turned to a window overlooking a square beside a Sunni mosque where Saddam Hussein made his final public appearance in Baghdad in April 2003.

His guards feared the future, Ibrahim said, partly because they no longer had contact with the U.S. military. Many Sahwas fear Baghdad will turn on them for their insurgent past.

“I still have good relations with the United States. I could go and live there,” he said, as a pair of yellow canaries chirped in a small cage and a
rickety ceiling fan revolved overhead.

“But I was born here, lived here, and I intend to die here. If I go, others will go, and then who will stay?”

ماذا نعمل لإصلاح السجون والمعتقلات العراقية وإيجاد المفقودين

1. تزويد السجون العراقية والمعتقلات بمنظومة مراقبة (كاميرات) تسجل ما يحدث داخل السجون أولا بأول على أقراص ليزرية غير قابلة للمسح وتوضع في كل مكان بالسجن أو المعتقل بلا استثناء لمنع الانتهاكات بكافة أنواعها.

2. ترحيل المعتقلين والملقى القبض عليهم من مقرات الألوية والأفواج فورا إلى السجون المركزية للتحقيق معهم من قبل المحقق العدلي وبحضور محامي المعتقل ومن لا يتمكن من توكيل محامي يتولى محامي تابع للحكومة بالدفاع عنه

3. يتم توجيه الاتهام للمعتقلين خلال 72 ساعة وبعكسه يطلق سراحهم

4. يتم تعديل أبنية السجون لتتلاءم مع المواصفات العالمية من حيث المواصفات الصحية وعدد المساجين في كل زنزانة والتهوية والتعرض لأشعة الشمس يوميا

5. فتح ورش داخل السجون لتعليم المسجونين الحرف اليدوية المختلفة مع دورات تدريبية مع إمكانية تعيينهم في دوائر الدولة كحرفيين بعد إكمالهم فترة السجن لتحويلهم إلى عناصر مفيدة للمجتمع

6. السماح للسجين المتزوج بالاختلاء مع زوجته لمرة واحدة شهريا بعد أن يرفع محامي السجين دعوى مشاهدة على مدير السجن إضافة لوضيفته للحصول على أمر قضائي بالاختلاء بزوجته بعد تقديم كافة وسائل الإثبات للمحكمة

7. إجراء الفحص الطبي والفحص النفسي بصورة دورية على المساجين لمعالجتهم من الأمراض العضوية والنفسية والكشف عن حالات التعذيب والاعتداءات الجنسية حتى بين المعتقلين أنفسهم

8. توفير الملاعب داخل السجون ومكتبة متواضعة وقاعة انترنت متواضعة للسماح للسجناء بممارسة هواياتهم وتفريغ طاقتهم الجسدية والنفسية

9. الحرص الشديد على عدم اختلاط المساجين الذين يأمل في إصلاحهم مع السجناء ذوي العقول المجرمة ولكي لا تصبح السجون وسيلة من وسائل نشر الفكر الإرهابي والإجرامي

10. تخضع كافة السجون والمعتقلات للتفتيش المفاجئ وبدون إنذار مسبق من قبل وزارة حقوق الإنسان ومنظمات المجتمع المدني المحلية منها والعالمية والإعلاميين والصحفيين.

11. السماح للسجين في حالة رغبته بإكمال دراسته والامتحان الخارجي وفتح دورات لمحو الأمية داخل السجون وفي حالة قيام السجين المتعلم بتدريس زملائه الأميين يخفف الحكم عنه بصورة معقولة تتلاءم مع جهوده المبذولة

12. زيادة عدد القضاة الذين ينظرون بقضايا المعتقلين مما يتلاءم مع أعداد المعتقلين الهائلة
بالنسبة للمفقودين إنشاء لجنة مشتركة من مجلس الوزراء الموقر ومجلس القضاء الأعلى ووزارتي الدفاع والداخلية وتقوم هذه اللجنة بالبحث عن أسماء المفقودين إن كانوا ضمن المعتقلين وتقوم هذه اللجنة بإنشاء مقر يسهل مراجعته وموقع الكتروني يقوم أهالي المفقودين ببعث صور أبنائهم المفقودين التي تنشر على هذا الموقع وفقا للأحرف الأبجدية وكذلك أرقام هواتفهم وايمايلاتهم إن وجدت ليتسنى لمن يدخل للموقع ويتعرف على صورة أو اسم أبنائهم الاتصال بهم هاتفيا أو الكترونيا

الهاشمي والمطلك واغتنام الفرص

في كل عصر وزمان هنالك تظهر بعض الزعامات والشخوص التي يشار اليها بالبنان بسبب مواقفهم التي تحسب لهم لما قدموه من خدمات في بعض المجالات التي يدعون بها, وايضا في الازمات تظهر معادن الرجال ولما تمثله الازمات التي تعتبر الامتحان الصعب مثلما هي المحك الذي يظهر عليه المعدن الاصيل وينكشف كل زيف.
فاليوم وبعد سنوات واكثر من عمر الاحتلال الغاشم ظهرت علينا شخوص كثيرة وبمسميات عديدة منها الاسلامية الوطنية والعلمانية وغيرها الكثير حيث لايمر علينا يوم الا وسمعنا تصريحاً او قولاً لفلان او علان الذي يمثل هذه الكتله او ذاك الحزب الفلاني.
وهناك من انكشف زيفه وبان معدنه ولم يستطع رغم كل ما يفعله لتلميع صورته امام النخب فأن الفشل يصاحبه دوما وخيرمثال على ذلك الازمة التي يمر بها الان العراق التي تهدده في حاضره وامن شعبه وفي حياته وديمومته إنها ((أزمة المياه)) التي باتت تركيا تتكلم بها, والتي طالما سمعنا -كلاماً ونحن صغار بأنه سوف يأتي يوم يكون فيه برميل الماء مقابل برميل النفط.
فهذه الازمة لاتهدد حياتنا نحن بني البشر العراقيين فحسب وانما تهدد العراق بأكمله وتهدد جغرافيتة كذلك, مثلما تهدد جميع الكائنات الحية التي تعيش على أرض العراق فهي تهدد الارض والزرع وتهدد النخيل والاشجار وكل شئ.
ورغم كل مايجري نرى المتصيدين في المار العكر المعتاشين على الازمات والمفلسين من كل شئ يظهرون ويحاولون ان يستغلوا هذه الازمة وغيرها من أجل اعادة تسويقهم من جديد بعد أن افتضح امرهم وانكشفت نواياهم واليوم يظهر لنا طارق الهاشمي وكأنه المنقذ الذي حصل على وعد من تركيا بزيادة الحصة المائية( 3%) نعم بعد زيارات متكررة للهاشمي وقبله صالح المطلك الذي لا يختلف عن الهاشمي فالاثنان من قناصي الفرص ومن اللاعبين على الحبال بمهارة والذين يحاولون دائماً استغلال أي ازمة ليظهروا لنا بأنهم الوطنيون الغيورون واصحاب المواقف التي في حقيقتها لاتتعدى كونها عبارة عن صفقات وتنازلات من اجل مكاسب حزبية وشخصية ضيقة يلهون وراءها دوما فترى اليوم الهاشمي وقبله (المطلك) وامثالهم بحيث ينطبق عليهم القول المعروف (( جاب السبع من ذيله)).
العراقيون كما يقال دائما عنهم (مفتحين بالتيزاب) لاتنطلي عليهم هذه المواقف الزائفة وهذه الفبركات الاعلامية التي يراد من خلالها إعادة تسويق الهاشمي من جديد بعد أن خسر كل شئ فقد خسر اهم معقلين له هما نينوى والانبار وانكشف زيف الحزب الاسلامي وبدأت تنكشف يوماً بعد يوم حجم السرقات والاختلاسات التي قام بها بعض اعضاء هذا الحزب والمنتسبين لمجالس المحافظات وخاصة في الانبار.
اليوم العراق جميعه على ابواب ازمة حقيقية تتطلب من الجميع الوقوف بوجه هذا التهديد الذي يطال العراق ولا يفرق بين أحد من ابنائه ولهذا المطلوب من الجميع التعامل مع هذه الازمة بحذر وحكمة واتباع السبل الكفيله لضمان حق العراق وثروته الوطنية وخاصة نهري دجلة والفرات لانهما حق تاريخي ولا يمكن التنازل عنه لاي سبب كان.

انطلقت منذ صباح اليوم الثلاثاء مظاهرة واسعة قام بها أساتذة جامعة الأنبار داخل الحرم الجالمعي، انطلاقا من مبنى كلية التربية مرورا يالشارع الأساسي للحرم الجامعي وإستقرت أمام مقر رئاسة الجامعة ، للمطالبة بإقالة رئيس الجامعة ومساعده الإداري ومساعده العلمي والعمداء الموالين له .
ونددت المتظاهرون بأساليب الفساد والأخطاء والإقصاء وحالات الاستبداد بالقرارات والتعسف بحقوق التدريسيين ، وخاصة ما يتعلق بقيام رئيس الجامعة بتفييض الأساتذة عن ةكلياتهم وأقسامهم العلمية ، التي سينجم عنها ضررا اقتصاديا وتهجيرا للعوائل ، طبقا للأهواء الشخصية التي عرف بها رئيس الجامعة .
واستكمل المتظاهرون مسيرتهم وتجمهروا داخل مدينة الرمادي أمام نقابة المعلمين ليواصلوا تنديدهم من خلال اللافتات التي رفعوها ضد رئيس الجامعة وأتباعه المسؤولين وناشد المتظاهرون دولة رئيس الحكومة والبرلمان ومعالي وزير التعليم بتخليص جامعة الأنبار من هؤلاء الفاسدين وتأمين خياتهم الجامعية بسلام بعيدا عن المستبدين والفاسدين المتحكمين بأمور الجامعة ، وأصدر المتظاهرون بيانهم الآتي :

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
إيمانا منا بالعمل على تصحيح المسارات الخاطئة التي تعيشها جامعة الأنبار على مختلف المجالات العلمية والإدارية والخدمية ، وبالذات ما يتعلق بحقوق التدريسيين التي أصبحت عرضة للتهديد والخطر ، من جراء إهمال المسؤولين فيها ( رئيسا ومساعدا وعمداء ) دون شعورهم بالمسؤولية التامة ، ودون قدرتهم على تحقيق العدالة والموضوعية والاستقرار الوظيفي لتدريسي الجامعة ، وغياب سعيهم عن العمل الجاد في الحفاظ على رأس المال البشري للتمسك بالمفيضين المراد إقصاءهم عن الجامعة وقطع أرزاقهم ، طبقا لمواقف شخصية ومزاجية باهتة .
فقد قررنا نحن التدريسيين في جامعة الأنبار التظاهر ضد رئيس الجامعة وأعوانه المساعدين والعمداء للمطالبة بإقالتهم عن الجامعة ، نظرا لضعف أدائهم في مسؤولياتهم ، وعدم رعايتهم وتبنّيهم لمطاليبنا في استمرارنا الوظيفي بجامعتنا ، أو التكفل بدعم حقوقنا الشاملة في الترقيات والعمل النزيه وعدم الضلوع بالشبهات والأخطاء والتضليل الإعلامي والكيل بمكيالين والازدواجية في السلوك والتصرفات وتطبيق التعليمات ، وعسكرة لجامعية بشكل مخل بحرمها وقدسيتها .
وإيمانا منا بأحقيتنا الوطنية والمهنية في خدمة تخصصاتنا العلمية والتربوية ، من أجل تقدم محافظتنا الغالية وعراقنا العزيز ، ورعاية أجيالنا المستقبلية ، التي لم تحسب حسابها جيدا رئاسة جامعة الأنبار ، فقد قررنا أن نتظاهر ضد رئاسة جامعة الأنبار التي أسهمت في زعزعة مستقبلنا المهني والوظيفي وحاولت أن تعيقنا عما يمكن أن نخدم به رسالتنا العلمية في الحياة والمجتمع .
ومن أجل ذلك .. نطالب الحكومة والبرلمان ومعالي وزير التعليم العالي بإقالة رئيس الجامعة من أجل أن تنهض جامعتنا في مسيرتها العلمية والتربوية إلى الأمام ، بكل ثقة ومسؤولية جديدة .
ونطالب أيضا بإقالة مساعد رئيس الجامعة العلمي ، ومساعد رئيس الجامعة الإداري ، والعمداء الموظفين الذين نسوا رسالتهم العلمية ، من أجل العمل على تحقيق رسالة الجامعة مجددا .
فجامعة الأنبار لكل المواطنين عموما ، وهي البيئة الأصيلة للمواطنة العامة ، وهي ليست للبيع ولا للمتاجرة ولا للارتزاق ، وهي ليست للمسؤولين المتعسفين والظالمين والفاسدين .
ونطالب الحكومة والسادة المسؤولين في المراكز العليا للقرارات ووزارة التعليم العالي ، أن يكونوا لنا دعماً ورعاية وتمسكاً بالموارد البشرية العلمية والكوادر التعليمية المبدعة ، حفاظا على أمننا الاجتماعي والاقتصادي والمهني والتعليمي ، من خلال ثباتنا وبقائنا في مواقعنا الجامعية ، دون خطر يتهدد حياتنا المستقبلية بالإقصاء والتدمير ، من أجل إحياء جامعة متميزة في الأنبار .

لم افكر مطلقا بكتابة اي تجربة من تجاربي الشخصية او اي موقف اتعرض له طيلة حياتي العامة او المهنية فمن وجهة نظري ان هذه الامور شيء شخصية يتعرض له اي انسان في بلد مثل العراق ……
ولكنني اليوم اتخذت قرار بان اكتب كل المواقف التي اتعرض لها لانني (امرأة) بنظر الاخرين ـ من الرجال ـ الذين يحتكرون الكلام للرجال فقط ولا يعطون الحق للمرأة في التحدث حتى وان طالبت بحقها في ذلك الحديث
لا اريد ان اطيل عليكم اليكم ما جرى :
بسبب الحر الشديد الذي يجتاح العراق سنويا مع بداية شهر نيسان يلجئ الغالبية العظمى من الناس الى ركوب سيارات النقل سواء كانت باص او تكسي ……الخ ، ولانني ممنوعة من التعرض لاشعة الشمس وغبار الجو بسبب حالة ما ، الجئ الى ركوب باص (18 راكب) او (كيا) عند وصولي الى اقرب مكان لمحل سكني وحسب ما يتوفر عند وقوفي في الشارع الذي يبعد عن مكان سكني حوالي 10 امتار وعادة ادفع مبلغ (250دينار) للسائق لاسباب اولها ان المسافه المقطوعة تعد جزء من ربع المسافة التي يقطعها السائق هذا بالاضافة الى كوني اركب من الشارع وعادة ما تسير هذه السيارات في الشارع دون دخولها الى المأراب الخاص اي انها تنقل الركاب (على الماشي) على حد قول العراقيين ، المهم في ذلك لم اسأل في يوم من الايام لماذا ادفع هذا المبلغ لان المسافة قريبة جدا. اليوم واثناء عودتي (الظهرية) المعتادة وبسبب سوء الوضع الجوي وارتفاع الغبار مع ارتفاع درجات الحرارة الشديدة اخذت الشارع مشيا وانا انتظر سيارة استقلها وبالفعل توقفت سيارة باص نوع (فورت 18 راكب) يقودها رجل اتوقع عمرة بالـ (48 سنة تقريا) ركبت الباص واخرجت المبلغ المعتادة ، وهنا صرخ بوجهي الرجل وقال: (الكروة 500 دينار شنو هذي الـ 250) اجبته بكل ادبت واحترام : هذا ما اعتدت ان ادفعة يوميا فالمسافة قصيرة جدا فضلا عن هذا فان سيارتك خالية من الركاب ـ إذ تتضمن 3 اشخاص فقط امرأتين وشاب لا يتجاوز الـ 18 سنة ـ اي انك لم تدخل الى المرأب لتأخذ اجرة كاملة وانا ركتبت معك من الشارع فقد تجاوزت مسافة من المكان المخصص لكم. وهنا ثار الرجل وكأنني قتلت له قتيل. فرمى الورقة فئة (250) بوجهي وقال لي بالحرف: انت فتاة وهذا المبلغ لا يستحق ان يتعالى صوتك من اجله … احترمي انوثتك ؟؟. ذهلت لما سمعت فهل من الضروري ان اسكت عن الحق ولا اطالب باستغلالي لكي احترم انوثتي؟ ومن يتابع الامور يجد ان النساء عادة يسكتن لكي لا يحرجن بمثل هذه المواقف ، ومن المعروف عن الرجال فانهم لا يتناقشون بهذه الامور يستسلم امام الامر الواقع ويدفع ما يطلب منه.
اخيرا طلبت من السائق انزالي بعد ان اعطيته المبلغ الذي اراده وقبل وصولي الى المكان المحدد لانني بصراحة لم استطع ان استمع لمزيد من كلامة الجارح …… وسألت نفسي الف مره ومرة إلى متى يبقى الانسان العراقي ساكت عن الحق

LOS ANGELES – Despite their admirable intentions and acclaimed names on both sides of the camera, the vast majority of movies made about the Iraq war have failed to hit the mark. Either they felt too preachy, like “Rendition” and “In the Valley of Elah,” or they were rather standard action pictures like “The Kingdom.”

“The Hurt Locker” is by far the most effective film yet on this subject — and what’s ironic about that is, it doesn’t even feel all that specific to the Iraq war. Its insights and reach extend far beyond what’s happened there over the past several years.

The film follows the efforts of an elite U.S. Army bomb squad, whose members have 38 days left before they can leave Baghdad in the summer of 2004. They’re under enormous pressure to avoid mistakes, because every time they’re called out to investigate a suspected explosive device, the tiniest false move can mean not only their deaths but the deaths of untold numbers of people around them. At the same time, they’re under their own internal stress to get the job done and get home.

Into this intense situation comes the swaggering Staff Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner, a Spirit Award nominee for the performance earlier this year), who approaches each task with a healthy mix of artistry and bravado. The other members of his team (a charismatic Anthony Mackie and a shy Brian Geraghty) don’t quite know what to make of him; James might be a genius at his job or he might be an egomaniacal showoff. Maybe he’s a little bit of both. At one point, James rips off the helmet of his clunky “space suit” to inspect a possible car bomb, his reasoning being: “If I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die comfortable.”

The script from journalist Mark Boal, who spent time embedded with this kind of bomb squad, presents James as a fascinating but always believable jumble of contradictions. He’s talented as hell but infuriating. He’s clearly addicted to the rush of war but, in a more relatable sense, he has a passion for a job that defines and drives him. James also shows flashes of sensitivity here and there, which are disarming in their own way.

So at its core, “The Hurt Locker” is an unexpected character study, but through the eyes of veteran action director Kathryn Bigelow (“Point Break,” “K-19: The Widowmaker”), it also offers an intimate look at gritty, visceral combat. Bigelow doesn’t go for sweeping battle scenes or glossy, computer-generated explosions. She also avoids political stands on the war. Rather, she makes you feel the claustrophobia and anxiety of her characters’ daily lives — the heavy breathing inside their protective gear, the crunch of gravel beneath their boots — as well as the aggressive way they blow off steam and the camaraderie they experience within their isolation. (The only small complaint: She might have trimmed a couple of scenes to make “The Hurt Locker” even leaner and meaner.)

Besides the main cast, excellent across the board, Bigelow gets strong work in a couple of tense cameos from Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes, and some rare levity from David Morse as a blowhard superior.

But perhaps the most surprising part of all: She ends on an uplifting note, though it may not be the kind you’d choose for yourself.

“The Hurt Locker,” a Summit Entertainment release, is rated R for war violence and language. Running time: 130 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Iraqis view the U.S. army pullout from city centers with mixed feelings. Some see it as a good move others as a harbinger of the worst to come.

Generally, Iraqis are unhappy with U.S. occupation troops and had it not been for the blunders of anti-U.S. rebels, particularly al-Qaeda group, Washington would have had very few friends in Iraq.

The Sunnis turned against al-Qaeda which they initially supported when it became evident its terrorizing techniques brought them more harm than benefit.

Powerful Sunni tribes enlisted their men in militia groups armed and supported by the U.S.

The tribal militias became a force to reckon with and in almost one year they managed to flush al-Qaeda from their areas and substantially curtail its terror attacks.

But would this marriage of convenience continue with the U.S. pulling out its troops from major cities?

Iraqi analysts say the lull in al-Qaeda attacks (it mounted a massive car bombing last week killing more than 70 Iraqis and wounding hundreds) could be a breather and the group would spring to action in the absence of U.S. fire power.

Still lightly armed and equipped, Iraqi security forces may not be well prepared to counter the highly organized al-Qaeda which analysts say it still musters large grassroots support among the Sunnis.

In central Iraq and in areas euphemistically called the “death triangle”, analysts say there has been a revival of attacks and reorganization by the group.

In Baghdad, for instance, the rebels now use highly advanced gun-silencers which in one day last week claimed the lives of at least six police officers.

The group has also made a comeback, albeit on a small scale, in the once restive cities of Falluja and Anbar.

The group’s presence and activities have gone on unabated in the Provinces of Diyala, of which Baaquba is the capital and Nineveh, of which Mosul is the capital.

The analysts say large swathes of both provinces still are in rebel hands.

Her name is Neda, which means “voice” in Farsi, and her death has become the central rallying cry of the Iranian rebellion.
The fresh-faced teenage girl killed by what appears to be a single sniper shot on the streets of Tehran Saturday is now a potent symbol for Iran’s pro-democracy protesters.
Her shocking and quick death in the arms of her howling father was captured on closeup video, posted to Facebook and came to life on computer screens across the globe.
“RIP Neda, the world cries seeing your last breath,” was one of a flood of messages on Twitter.
“They killed Neda, but not her voice,” read another. “Neda is everyone’s sister, everyone’s daughter, everyone’s voice for freedom,” said a third.
Within hours of her death, posters of the girl’s face, open-eyed and bloody, were being brandished by demonstrators in Los Angeles and New York City.
The graphic video was originally posted to Facebook by an Iranian expatriate in Holland who said it was sent to him by a friend in Tehran , a doctor who tried to save the girl.
He identified her as Neda Soltani, a 16-year-old philosophy student.
A Facebook group created to mourn her calls her “The Angel of Iran.”
In Tehran on Sunday, the streets were quiet for the first time in a week, but the city was bracing for more unrest today when thousands are expected to mourn the girl’s death.
“To protest against lies and fraud is your right,” opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi told his followers in a statement.
“Be hopeful in exercising your rights and do not allow those who try to instill fear in you to make you angry.”
An ABC reporter in Dubai said she was told the girl was rapidly buried to forestall a funeral rally.
In the holy city of Qom, turmoil was reported among the ruling clerics. There were reports that some dissident clerics were trying to replace the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The regime is under threat after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a suspiciously huge landslide in the June 12 election, sparking accusations of vote rigging and days of mass protests.
Saturday’s brutal crackdown, in which at least a dozen people were killed and hundreds wounded, hardened opposition to the supreme leader as well as Ahmadinejad.
In apparent retaliation, the daughter of powerful former President Hashemi Rafsanjani and four of his other relatives were arrested and held for a day, according to state TV.
State radio said Monday that 457 people were arrested in the clashes.
Rafsanjani’s kin were held for a day for their own protection, but it was seen in most quarters as a clear warning to curb his support for Mousavi.
Rafsanjani, 75, is chairman of the Assembly of Experts that has the power to remove the supreme leader and is Mousavi’s most powerful ally.
Reporters Without Borders said 33 Iranian journalists and bloggers have been arrested even as the foreign press was barred from the streets .
“The regime has been visibly shaken by its own population. That is why the media have become a priority target,” Reporters Without Borders said.
State TV blamed “terrorists” for the street violence.
BBC Persia aired extraordinary video of a crowd of stone-throwing youths on Saturday slowly advancing on a cadre of well-armed police with riot shields, finally forcing the security forces to turn tail and run.
BBC’s lead reporter in Tehran was subsequently told he had 24 hours to leave the country.
A Life.com magazine photographer was missing, and a Newsweek reporter arrested.
Germany called for a revote, and French President Nicolas Sarkozy called the crackdown on peaceful protest “inexcusable.”
As the Neda video ignited fury and tears, several new Twitter accounts were opened dedicated solely to insisting the video was fake. The posters were roundly shouted down as tools of the Iranian regime.
One of the many other videos of the Tehran protests uploaded to YouTube captured the girl in the last moments of her life, standing on a curb with her silver-haired father, watching the protesters go by.
In a country where martyrdom is a matter of great import and mourning marches often mix with protests, the girl’s very public death has the potential to be a galvanizing event.

That Twitter post was from a man who said he is a guitarist from Nashville , Tennessee .
Amid the hundreds of images of Saturday’s crackdown on protesters in Iran that were distributed to the world over the Internet, it was the graphic video showing the dying moments of a young woman shot in the heart that touched a nerve for many people around the world.
Like most of the information coming out of Tehran, it is impossible to verify her name, Neda, or the circumstances of her apparent death, which was captured close-up on a bystander’s camera.
CNN ran a pixilated version of the video, which was posted on YouTube. Another amateur video captured images of Neda and her father attending what appeared to be a peaceful protest, just moments before the shooting.
It shows a woman in jeans and white sneakers collapsed on the street, as the person with the camera — most likely from a cell phone — runs toward her and focuses on her face.
One blogger posted that Neda was protesting with her father in Tehran when pro-government Basiji militia opened fire and shot her.
“The final moments of her tender young life leaked into the pavement of Karegeh Street today, captured by cell phone cameras,” the unnamed blogger posted on Newsvine.com. “And not long after, took on new life, flickering across computer screens around the world on YouTube, and even CNN.”
People on Twitter started forming a discussion group with the “hashtag” #neda to post their comments about her death and media coverage of the killing, as well.
It became one of the top “trending topics” on Twitter by Saturday evening, early Sunday Tehran time.
“Neda, ojala que tu muerte no sea en vano,” one poster tweeted in Spanish. “Neda, I hope that your death is not in vain.”

Iraqi professionals of various specializations living abroad used to think that their exile would come to an end once the regime of former President Saddam Hussein was toppled.

That dream came true in 2003 when a U.S.-led invasion removed the regime from power. In the first few months of the invasion, it was reported that hundreds of exiled engineers, doctors, university professors and highly skilled technicians had opted to return.

But it did not take them long to discover that new gates of hell were descending on Iraq, this time with a force much worse than that under Saddam Hussein.

A new exodus took place. This time, it did not include those who had decided to return but covered thousands more who had endured Saddam Hussein’s hardships.

And all discovered that the hardships caused by the former regime were a ‘blessing’ when compared to those that descended on the country in the U.S. invasion aftermath.

I have received several letters from university professors in exile telling about untold suffering in what is being sold to the world as ‘the new democracy’ in the country.

The environment in the country is not one of patriotism but one of factionalism. Political interests and sectarian affiliation come before loyalty to the country.

Only those with a factional and sectarian umbrella can prosper in today’s Iraq. Without that umbrella you are doomed.

But for professionals, there is nothing more disdainful than factionalism and sectarianism. These bright Iraqi minds, some of them now occupy prestigious positions in Western institutions, are among the Middle East’s most secular people.

Instead of fostering them, the U.S. invasion and the governments it has sponsored, have strived to exterminate them.

Stories of Iraqi intellectuals killed, kidnapped and tortured are too many to be told.

And as the country sees some faint light at the end of its tunnel, the government blocks the way for the professionals who would like to come home.

The relative quiet has tempted many of them to make another try only to find that there is no longer a place for them under the pretext of the slump in oil prices.

But prices are edging up once again, and the returning professionals are still waiting for a word on whether they have a future in their own country.

We have reported that hundreds have decided to return once again. We urge the government to accommodate them as soon as possible.

We are a country which needs its professionals most.
