NGOs meet with theIraqi parliament president

In the 26 of April 2009 a delegation of Iraqi NGOs representatives’ meet with the new elected Iraqi parliament president Mr.ayad alsmerai to discuss the comments of the Iraqi NGOs on the draft the meeting was arrange by the NGO coordination committee in Iraq NCCI and it was represented by Mr.hashim alassaf ,and other NGO representatives from Iraqi women net work ,Iraqi alamal association ,the head of the Iraqi-Turkish friendship association ,the academic committee
The delegation present their comments and the international center for NGOs on the draft of IRAQI NGOS law ,the head of the parliament listen to the comments and the recommendations ,and he showed his understanding to the organizations complements on the law and promised to work to organize a meeting between members of the civil society and parliament members to discuss the law
This meeting came as part of local and international campaign to stop issuing the new NGOs law without reforming several paragraphs , as The new Iraqi civil society law, that awaits ratification by the government, endangers the independence of civil society in Iraq. Iraqi NGOs are afraid that the government aims to monitor and control the funding and operations of NGOs. This fear has been strengthened in the last year, because the parliament failed to consult with NGOs when drafting the new NGO law. The current draft appears to be aimed at controlling NGO activities, rather than supporting the development of an autonomous and vibrant civil society The 2008 NGO law has been passed by the Shoura Council and is currently awaiting Cabinet approval. While the latest draft contains significant improvements on previous drafts, Iraqi NGOs remain concerned about certain aspects of the law, which could have serious implications for the future independence of Iraqi civil society and for international NGOs working in the Iraq context.

Therefore a new law needs to be created in cooperation with international and national NGO’s to provide Iraqi civil society with a suitable environment to work and cooperate their efforts with the government for the welfare of the Iraqi people.
Therefore several independent Iraqi activists started to promote a petition to reform the law through small independent web sit Iraqi streets
To promote this cause, Iraqi streets website (www.iraqistreets.com),
